Essential Oils at Home: Aromatherapy, Well-Being, and Feng Shui

Updated: Oct 3

In recent years, the use of essential oils has spread as a natural practice to improve personal well-being and harmonize the home environment. When combined with the principles of Feng Shui, they become effective tools for rebalancing the body, mind, and space.

We know well how the home is much more than just a living space: it is a reflection of our energy, emotions, and lifestyle. This is where essential oils come in—powerful natural allies capable of harmonizing the atmosphere and nurturing our daily well-being.

In traditional Feng Shui, there is no direct correspondence between the nose and the Bagua map. Yet, in Chinese physiognomy (Mian Xiang), the nose symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and the ability to manage resources. A straight, proportionate nose is regarded as a sign of financial stability, while its tip and nostrils indicate how easily wealth circulates and is retained. Some analogies have therefore been drawn with the Wealth area (Southeast) and, occasionally, with the Fame area (South), though these are not formal Feng Shui associations.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), on the other hand, the nose has a well-defined role: it is linked to the Metal element and considered the “door of the Lungs.” Its condition mirrors the quality of breathing, and thus the vitality of the Qi. The emotion tied to Metal is sadness, expressed precisely through respiration.

Just as essential oils help balance the energies of our environment, the nose too acts as a bridge: in face reading, it reveals abundance and prestige; in medical tradition, it reflects the flow of vital energy within us.

In this article, we will see how to use them within the home environment. Naturally, I want to remind you that the properties of each essential oil (and oil blend) are vast, and we would need a lot of space to explore this world in full depth.

At home, the conscious use of essential oils can make a big difference.

Firstly, it promotes relaxation and deep sleep, helping the body and mind to regenerate truly during the night. Furthermore, it stimulates concentration and productivity, making it easier to work, study, or stay focused during moments that require attention.

Essential oils also allow us to create an energetically clean, lighter, and more harmonious environment. A home that supports us, welcomes us, and makes us feel good.

On an emotional level, these natural aromas help manage stress, tension, and fluctuating emotions, bringing us back to the center, to our inner balance.

Finally, through the simple act of breathing in a pure aroma, we can reinforce our physical well-being: because smell is a direct bridge between the body and emotions, between the brain and the heart.

In short: perfuming the house with essential oils is not just a gesture of pleasure... it is a true act of care. For us, for those living with us, and for our most intimate space: the home.

In my daily life, I use the doTERRA brand, recognized for the purity and high quality of its products. It is a proprietary brand (CPTG®) with an ethical and sustainable model that guarantees purity, potency, and safety of oils, free from synthetic substances or contaminants.

Essential oils possess numerous beneficial properties, ranging from physical well-being to emotional support. But there is an even more fascinating and often overlooked aspect: their ability to act as a subtle yet powerful bridge between the human being and the environment in which they live.

Through smell, oils connect us directly to our surroundings, influencing our perception of space, our mood, and our energetic balance.

Now, let’s explore in more detail how these natural aromas interact with home environments, transforming them into places of harmony, vitality, and well-being.

In the Bedroom with Essential Oils

Sleep is one of the vital functions most influenced by the environment. In an energetically disturbed bedroom, the most suitable essential oils for promoting regenerative sleep are:

  • Lavender: calming, relaxing, and adaptogenic

  • Roman Chamomile: ideal for children and those suffering from insomnia

  • Vetiver: With its intense scent of earth and grass, it feels like stepping into a deep forest - Helps ground and calm the hyperactive mind.

For use:

  • Evening aromatic diffusion (place a few drops in your aromatic diffuser)

  • Topical application on the neck and under the feet (additionally, a good foot massage can truly improve our sleep...)

  • One drop on the pillow or on a fabric near the nostrils

For a better effect with aromatic diffusion, consider that the diffuser size should follow the proportion relative to the size of the room. As well as the number of drops to be added. Regarding topical application, I recommend not overdoing it, keeping to one drop per treated body area.

In the bedroom, we don’t sleep alone, right?... And we know how the perception of a smell can influence hormones.

I recommend experimenting topically or in your diffuser:

  • Damask Rose: It is one of the most precious and sought-after essential oils in the world, not only for its rich, floral fragrance but also for its numerous beneficial properties. Use if you need to increase romance and connection

  • Black Spruce: resinous scent reminiscent of deep forests. In case you desire a youthful freshness effect and at the same time free your mind from daily thoughts.

Patchouli and Ylang Ylang are also highly recommended... try it with your nose.

Stimulating Energy and Focus in the Study or Work Area

With the increase of flexible work from home and remote work, it is essential to create an energetic distinction between the night area (yin) and the day/work area (yang). Essential oils can transform the space based on the desired type of energy.

To stimulate concentration and vitality, we can diffuse:

  • Peppermint: energizing, refreshing, and improves focus

  • Rosemary: stimulates memory and has antimicrobial action

  • Lemon: promotes mental clarity and motivation (excellent source of vitamin C, purifies the body and environments)

  • Purify (blend): promotes an energetically clean environment (use when the work environment is stressful and there is an overload of negative energy). It is a refreshing doTERRA blend composed of Lemon, Siberian Fir, Citronella, Tea Tree, and Coriander

  • Cinnamon: known as an enhancer of abundance in Feng Shui, can be highly beneficial in retail environments or in the closing of business deals.

Recommended applications:

  • Diffusion in the morning or before starting work

  • Scenting the environment with natural sprays

  • Direct inhalation or roll-on on the skin

Drink with water* (only in the case of Peppermint and Lemon. Remember the proportions, for example, one drop of peppermint and/or lemon in 1 liter of natural water).

House Energy Cleansing

Talking about the Purify blend, I realized that an important point to include in this article is cleaning, both physical and energetic. Essential oils can be used in natural cleaners to sanitize surfaces and refresh spaces, contributing to a harmonious and light atmosphere. I suggest exceptional options for their valuable properties, which, in addition to caring for the body, can also be used as disinfectants and natural cleaners.

Essentials oils suitable for purification:

  • Purify (blend): neutralizes odors and heavy energy charges

  • On Guard: powerful doTERRA blend (also used to support the immune system daily) that improves the cleaning process and eliminates bad odors

  • Lemon: antiseptic, gives freshness

  • Tea Tree: among its many properties, it is an excellent natural disinfectant, ideal for cleaning surfaces

Recommended applications:

  • Diffusion with an aromatic diffuser for environments

  • Add a few drops to a natural cleaner (water, vinegar, and essential oil)

  • 1 or 2 drops directly on a damp cloth

Creating Yin and Yang Environments with Essential Oils as with Furniture

In Feng Shui, every space has a polarity, and following this principle is already an important step in choosing our furniture:

  • Yin environments (bedroom, bathroom) require tranquility, soft colors, soft fabrics, and relaxing aromas.

  • Yang environments (living room, office, kitchen) are stimulating, with vibrant colors, natural light, and energizing oils.

The use of essential oils suitable for each environment can support this balance and energetic coherence.

A union beyond the scent.

It’s a way to live spaces in harmony, support emotional balance, and create environments that nurture, protect, and inspire. A small daily gesture can radically transform the way we inhabit… and live.
